Ok I think I got it working. There may be some errors in the initialization object/documentation for the default values
dbm.maxColor = 0xFF000000 makes anything past the maxZ Black NOT 0x000000, you need the alpha in the uint dbm.minColor = 0x00FFFFFF or 0xFFFFFFFF doesn't change stuff before the minZ. Anything after minZ and before maxZ will fade to the maxColor. If you there are no alpha values like in the default constructor/ documentation, it doesn't work and does what I described in the original post.
