AS3 is next to be lightweight easy to use and you end up with no loading blues
highly suitable for elements that needs to be loaded only once.

awd format is also lightweight, and can be dropped into Prefab, the away
project editor
and all awd files are cross engines, this means you can load/embed the same awd
files in Away3D F9, Away3D F10 and Away3DLite
and of course all upcoming versions. This is not the case with AS3. awd format
is highly suitable for runtime loads.

Both formats also protect a bit your files from being reused as easy as an obj
or 3ds file once online.

I recommand use both for everything but bones animations.

of course there is nothing wrong by loading obj, 3ds, md2 etc etc
