Merge and weld are parsing the geometry to do their jobs. The larger in terms 
of face count the longer they need to do their jobs, They are most usefull at 
edit or dev time to preppare your models for the final runtime.
But if its just a question of sharing material, why not just apply the same 
material to each of the meshes?
