I'd suggest you start with writing a game in 2D first - or have you?
The simplest thing to do then is to replace your sprites with 3D
objects (keeping them in a 2D plane) and do some trickery with making
sure you don't have too many object on screen at once. I know it's not
much of a start, but it wasn't much of a specific question either.
