There is no out of the box option in Away for this, using the transparent pixels from bmd and building a mesh from the "pixel grid" is only option you have. Then each point of the silhouet is to be given to SkinExtrusion. The back face is same as front face except you either add z or y depending on plan you will use.
if each cell of the grid represent 2 faces, its should not be too difficult to build, then parse all cells where left,top,botton are also faces to lower face count if image base is huge. I recall seen more PV stuff done on this, back in 2007/2008 like this one.
