To close the loop... The only exporter that successfully exports animations from 3ds max in a collada format that away3dlite currently imports, is the free ColladaMax 3.05c plugin. OpenCollada and the Maya equivalent versions had various issues.
Another key thing to note is the controls need to be stripped from the rig in 3ds. ColladaMax will not export them in a way that away3dLite is happy about. It may be that away3dlite is not processing them correctly <shrug>. Either way, at this point in time on trunk, its necessary.
