Regarding MXML:

Actionscript 3 (or haXe) is the language of choice when developing Flash projects. Like using Box2D or Away3D, Flex is an AS3 framework. Like any framework, consider its advantages, and be aware of its restrictions. There is a learning curve to understanding any framework.

I don't use Flex often. Away3D and Box2D handle math equations and operations that might be very time consuming to replicate. Learning the framework, therefore, because a huge benefit and time-saver. Flex tends to complicate things which I could do easily in pure Actionscript, and sometimes makes it difficult to control the final result.

If you do use MXML, I personally would recommend a "code-behind" approach, using pure AS3 classes behind an MXML display.

Regarding FlashDevelop:

Yep, FlashDevelop has had a profiler since May of this year. It also has a debugger and version control

Aloha,

Wow, lots of info was requested and was given, nice!:)

About MXML, stay away from MXML if you can, rather use Flex Builder
(or fd) for pure AS3 projects. You learn faster that way, have more
control (and it's faster).

@Joshua Granick: Was wondering, does FD have a profiler ?
