How is it possible to have 9000 planes in the scene with 50-60fps?

I assume by seeing in AwayStats that only polys that are on the screen
are rendered. And what about each plane on the example having 30
segments? Is there any relation to this?

How does the Octree relates to this? Tried to reproduce the test with
a grid of planes in the XZ axis, in a separate class, but even with
fewer planes (~2000) my performance is below (~30fps). I'm using a
simple ColorMaterial.
