I know that the Linux player release dates usually lag far behind the Mac and PC player release dates. Even if you were able to compile stuff on Linux, there may be a good chance you won't be able to see your own work until they create the Linux player, which in the worst case might be a year(s) away. However, someone might know more about that than me.
