That is not because the direct access to OpenGL .In fact it is not direct as it passes via JVM .just like in ActionScript context3D passes via AVM.It is because Java is very fast language in comparison to AS and its VM is much optimized (read Joa Ebert stuff on this). Second, why would not you go for unity3D ? In this case you can have both worlds -online and desktop + multiplatforming. Eventually ,I haven't seen something complex and GPU intensive in your demo to conclude that Away4 could not deal with .I created a demo(gonna upload it into my blog soon) for an event I spoke several days ago.It has a huge outdoor environment with some 5000 buidlings.Dynamic lights ,postprocessing filters,particles and also steer AI .
