Your question is not really related to Away3D (although it doesn't hurt asking as there might be some Away3D functions that might help you to achieve the desired effect). But yes, if you know how many items are in the carousel then you know the angle between them (as seen from the center). If you also keep track of the angle between the camera, carousel center point and nearest item to camera then you should be able to rotate back or forth to snap it correctly on the nearest item. But you've probably figured it out already :P
