I'm currently using awesome 3.0~rc5-1 (debian package), though this occured in 2.3.4-1 as well.
In short, my setup is the following: I've got one dual head nvidia card using the nv driver and xrandr to do the dual head, and a second ati card to drive the third monitor. Awesome splits the nvidia head into two virtual screens properly when only it is in use, but doesn't when the third head is being used. That is, instead of looking like OOO the display is instead []O, with the two xrandr'd heads appearing as a single large screen, instead of two separate screens. I'm not sure if this is a bug in awesome, my setup, xrandr, or xcb, but I'd really like to be able to fix it, or at least work around it. [Custom hacks aren't a big deal, though my infamiliarity with awesome's codebase makes me making the hack slightly more difficult. ;-)] Let me know if more information is required.
