I looked into this a bit more, and I think I have a fix (see below).
- First, I think this bug might be related to a thread on the dwm
mailing list (see http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg01530.html).
This makes me wonder if it has something to do with non-reparenting window
managers (?).
- Second, and more importantly, I remembered seeing this bug in old versions
of awesome2. So, I tried an old version (2.2~rc2) that I had handy and the
problem was there, but I couldn't reproduce it in awesome 2.3.4. So, I did a
binary search though the git repository building and testing versions of
awesome until I tracked down the commit that fixed the problem:

I'm not sure why this seems to fix the bug, but I tried similar code in the
current version of awesome (3.1rc5). The diff is attached. I haven't tested
it extensively, but it does seem to work as I can't seem to trigger the bug
anymore.
