When I re-installed last night, I restarted HEAD from the menu thing (awesome->restart) I later unplugged my laptop (made it single head) This morning I plugged it back into the external monitor and saw the same behavior as before. When I restarted awesome it worked correctly. So I think this is still a bug. It's not responding to xrandr events correctly and caching something somewhere.
