Details - I have tried this with awesome 3.4.2 and awesome git.
Essentially, the systray refuses to show up.
It was working in 3.4.1, so I did a git bisect (thanks psychon) and found the
problem to be in 1d65b7.
I tried a git revert 1d65b7 and it fixed my problem.
