A new Flyspray task has been opened. Details are below. User who did this - Pierre Saint-Laurent (octaveinawesome)
Attached to Project - awesome
Summary - Octave/Gnuplot sucks most CPU resources when in full screen layout
Task Type - Bug Report
Category - awesome-2
Status - Unconfirmed
Assigned To - Operating System - Linux
Severity - Medium
Priority - Normal
Reported Version - 2.3.6
Due in Version - Undecided
Due Date - Undecided
Details - Hi,

this bug report is for awesome 2.3.3 (Debian Lenny), but it might also be
relevant to more recent versions (I do not have access to those).

It can be reproduced in the following manner :

1- Select the full screen layout (i.e. the X image in the Awesome status bar).
2- Start Octave (`octave`)
3- Plot any curve (`plot(1:100)`)
4- Watch the cpu usage (`top`); Xorg suddenly jumps to roughly 50%, Awesome
30%, and gnuplot_x11 10%.

Interestingly, this does not happen if octave is lauched under Awesome's
windowed layout (i.e. when there is the mouse image in the Awesome status bar).
It does not occur either under Gnome.
Perhaps Gnuplot and Awesome fight in some way when the full screen layout is in
use?
I'm sorry for not being more useful, my knowledge of GUI programming is nill.

Of course an easy solution would be to force Octave/Gnuplot to run in windowed
layout, but then I'd be better going back to Gnome.

P.S. All software mentioned in this bug report are the stock packages from
Debian Lenny.
P.S. I am not pretending in any way that this behavior is a `bug` in Awesome. I
am only seeking help because I need Octave for my work, and I'd love to use
Awesome as my main window manager.

Thanks for your help,

Pierre
