I have little understanding why, but the way suggested by Julien didn't work 
for me: any revision I compiled via make and run from my homedir was good or 
bad depending on what version of awesome was installed system-wide, by Portage. 
Therefore I used my quick'n'dirty shell script (see it attached) to compile and 
install every tested revision. It creates temporary tarball, updates metadata 
in local overlay (where I put renamed copy of 3.4.5 ebuild) and emerges it as a 
3.4.999. lotus, you could try it yourself, if you want to confirm my results.
