OK, apparently the problem lay between keyboard and chair :-) ... turns out the
netbeans window(s) were coming up in maximized mode; or at least it thought it
was maximized, although this was not actually the case. Once 'unmaximized', all
control and functionality returned. Sorry for the fumble, and thanks for the
help. This is not a bug and can be closed--
