The thing is, in 3.4.11, I was able to set the transparency of theme.bg_normal (and some other color values in the theme file) by setting it to something like #00000088. This also worked when directly setting the bg of a wibox. If I try to set the alpha channel using this format in git master Awesome spits out a message saying "awesome: error, invalid color '#00000080' and the wibox gets rendered with a black background. I am aware that I can set the opacity of a wibox, but this results in everything inside the wibox being transparent too.
