I have exactly the same issue with Pidgin.
Everything works fine when the Pidgin tag is active, but new windows are set as
master when the tag is not active.
I have the following configuration (full rc.lua attached):
client.add_signal("manage", function (c, startup)
if not startup then
awful.client.setslave(c)
end
...
end)
