Besides my remarks mentioned in FS#1209, today I found the following behaviour:

As described earlier after adding monitors via xrandr the windowplacement was 
wrong. I killed awesomewm and started it again. The result was still wrong 
window placement.
But:
After placing the windows on the right screens/tags and killing+starting 
awesomewm the windows are still placed on their right positions.

So something get messed up when using xrandr and I'm not sure if it's inside 
aswesomewm.
Maybe awesomewm is relying on wrong asumptions of information it uses from the 
X system?
