Yes, os.execute() has not been patched in 3.3.3. Only awesome.spawn(), which is used by the awful and the default config. I'll backport the fix from master to 3.3 branch and release a 3.3.4 ASAP, in the meantine I suggest to not use os.execute() but awful.util.spawn() for example.
