I've encountered this same issue with Java apps, have you tried using the
"wmname" program on the off-chance it's the same root cause?

Does the problem still happen when you're using a tiled layout? (in case the
windows are being created off-screen, the tiled layout might force them to
move onto the screen.)

It looks interesting, but on an unrelated note, what does clusterssh do that
Awesome doesn't already do?  For example here is a small screenshot of my
terminals running under Awesome: http://www.shikadi.net/pics/awesome_urxvt.jpg

It looks like it just tiles the windows for you, which is what Awesome already
does.
