I've noticed the same problem both when I drag a window onto another screen or
when I press Mod4+lclick on a tag. The focused window (the one being moved)
loses its focus and in this case, no other window on the system has focus. If
I move the window back to its original screen then some random window on that
screen gets the focus.

I think it must be a bug.

If you don't get any better suggestions I might try this, it's a bit annoying
moving windows around and having them unexpectedly lose focus. (Which is all
the more difficult because if you Mod4+drag a window to another screen when
you left-click again, Awesome resumes the drag operation even though you're
not holding Mod4. So to move a window to another screen with the mouse, you
actually have to hold Mod4 and drag the window, then let go of Mod4, then move
the mouse a few pixels, then click on the window to focus it...)

Definitely seems like a bug to me :-)

Cheers,
Adam.
