May not matter, but it's wise to import 3rd party add-ons strictly
after you import and initialize the standard packages. I.e. revelation
should go after beautiful and beautiful init. Sometimes not doing so
will bite you.

Ensure that you put this awful.key object into the proper globalkeys
list with a comma at the end. Otherwise, revelation may be broken.

This doesn't go at the end of the file. In the latest awesome, this
goes into the manage hook. Here's an example (your hook may vary
slightly):
-- Signal function to execute when a new client appears.
client.add_signal("manage", function (c, startup)
-- awful.titlebar.add(c, { modkey = modkey })
c.size_hints_honor = false
if not startup then
if not c.size_hints.user_position and
not c.size_hints.program_position then
awful.placement.no_overlap(c)
awful.placement.no_offscreen(c)
end
end
end)
As general advice that will surely find what the problem is, read
awesome's stderr output: awesome will output messages about what is
wrong to the terminal where it was run. Since I vaguely read that
you're using .xinitrc via gdm (or something), you should be able to
awesome &> /home/you/awesome.log
This will, in bash, capture all output from awesome and dump it to
this file. You can view it interactively with tail -f
/home/you/awesome.log, or read the file otherwise.
