This seems a misplaced question, but what the hell, the whole thread is out of awesome's scope :)

Put simply (as I understand it):
- fonts are rendered via rendering libraries (such as freetype or xft)
- fonts are organized in system-wide collections (managed by fontconfig)
- default rendering options may be stored as fonts' meta information (as in fonts.conf) - gtkrc & Xdefaults is a common way to store configuration parameters for a variety of programs and these parameters may be used to fine-tune (override) font rendering configuration on per-application basis.
