Well, I'm not certainly sure (probably Julien will be the best person to explain this), but most probably Awesome somehow gets info about monitor configuration from X server. When you use one graphics card everything is pretty OK, because RandR can handle it just perfect. Unfortunately it all goes wrong when you connect second card, because RandR can't properly configure it, and X server is somehow confused.
