Screenshot? Do you use xcompmgr (or something similar, e.g. unagi)?

If I understand correctly, then your wallpaper should be visible in those gaps,
because no window uses up that area. The wallpaper is automatically drawn by the
X11 server, so there is nothing which awesome could do wrong here.
