If it's chromium, awesome, the kernel, X, the compositor, the graphic card driver, … The first thing to do is to try to get access to your system again. Usually <Ctrl-Alt-F1> works. Then try to kill or restart the programs in question. When this happens on my system it's a pretty good guess that the compositor crashed. Another hint. Try not to pop out tabs in chromium.
