Sometimes the menus work, then suddenly they disappear. I cannot

fine. I was unable to trigger the behaviour with Mutter. The
behaviour is present if I run the GNOME session with awesome as WM
as well as with the plain awesome session.
Has anyone experienced similar issues or maybe has an idea what
could be the cause?
I am running GNOME 4.3.2 with awesome 3.4.13-1 as WM on Debian
unstable on an Intel Sandybridge Mobile graphic adapter.

I've had this problem for a while and haven't had the energy to find the
cause. In addition to the behavior in the video, sometimes the menus
show up displaced from their normal position - possibly all the way on
the opposite side of the screen.
I think this only happens with GTK3, not with GTK2. I can't make it
happen with Parcellite or Firefox, both of which use GTK2.
