Hello,
I was using free_desktop but it crashes with awesome 3.5, so I was going to
replace it with menu_bar.

I played a little with menubar.menu_gen.generate(), but the items it
returns are not classical menu items (it can't feed directly an
awful.menu). and the things are not ordered by categories (freedesktop was
returning a tree of menu items). Maybe another function can be added to
menubar that could do that ?

Also there is currently no way to list all categories in menubar, am I
right ?

As a side note the lookup_icon of menubar is not a replacement for
free_desktop's one:
freedesktop.utils.lookup_icon({ icon="system-file-manager" }) or
freedesktop.utils.lookup_icon({ icon="terminal" }) doesn't work with
menubar.

Sincerly
