Every time a terminal window is focused it appears to be resized, as the
background image I am using enlarges slightly and then shrinks back to its
original size. This adds about a one second delay when switching tags which
really slows things down.

I think I've found a workaround for this in case anyone else stumbles across it. Running awesome with --no-argb removes the delay - the resizes still happen, it's just much faster so there's a significantly smaller delay (though still worse than under 3.4).

I can also watch HD movies again, which were so slow and jerky they were unwatchable before.

But if anyone knows how to stop Awesome from trying to resize urxvt each time the window is focused or unhidden (when changing tags) let me know! This only happens on a tiled layout FWIW, and it's most noticeable with a background image set to fill the window (as opposed to the image being tiled.)

Cheers,
Adam.
