To understand your situation:
You tried to run Awesome WM (Window Manager) into another WM as Unity,
Gnome, KDE etc. Which is provided with your Ubuntu.
That's absolutely forbidden!

To workaround try that:
Logout from your session from your current WM. Then you arrive at login
screen. From there, look for a dropdown menu with 'awesome' in it.

If you don't see that menu, just tell us.
