If you read the wiki section on installing awesome on Ubuntu, you will see that session entries have to be made. Once you do them, they opting will open in the log in guitar screen.
Ubuntu repository has 3.4 version and installing from there creates the session entries. I installed from packaged deb files available for later versions.
