My guess, when you press your mod4 key, this action are stopping on the host awesome. Virtual box don't receive it. I.e., no different, move you simple terminal window or move you vbox window. I suppose, this behavior is a fundamental.
I have no solution, but have similar problem with Kerbal space program game. This require left Alt pressed, which is my mod1 key, I use right shift instead.
