One additional remark. You do not call ::CoUninitialize() in
awt_Taskbar.cpp.
And I'm not sure that COM init/uninit can be done from arbitrary
thread without aftereffects. MSDN states the next:
A thread must call CoUninitialize once for each successful call it has
made to the CoInitialize or CoInitializeEx function, including any
call that returns S_FALSE. Only the CoUninitialize call corresponding
to the CoInitialize or CoInitializeEx call that initialized the
library can close it.
Sure, we can place these calls on ShellFolder's thread, updated.
NB: if you create an application with taskbar menu and a progress bar
and register it with Unity,
then start 2 instances of the application and
then call getTaskbar().setIconBadge(null) in the first instance
(not in the second),
result will be, completely removed taskbar menu.
Perhaps it is a Unity bug -- or this progress cleanup should be done
someway differently.
Yes, I can reproduce the same behaviour with native application, it
looks like a bug to me,
but for now it is workoarounded by reapplying menu.

AFAIK only services will receive this notification, and anyway
all apps the user was running are already killed by this time.
