Apparently the modern way to handle pdf vs dvi output is to use the ifpdf package: http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/help/Catalogue/entries/ifpdf.html So that may help with some of these issues, although I don't know if it extends to the pstricks and pst-pdf stuff.
