As I explained a few days ago, the build machinery will be broken into a few installments -- incremental improvements: (1) configure (2) Makefiles in several pieces. I would like to get the configure change in first, then attack the Makefile modification seperately in separate changes. Yes, the new configure is not that all useful without the Makefiles, but in its own it is not entirely useless either and it is certainly an improvement over Silver's configure.
