Using --{enable,disable}-debug is used to enable/disable code level
debugging. For example, this can set a symbol _DEBUG_ in config.h, so
there can be fragments of code that will look like:
#ifdef _DEBUG_
fprintf(stderr, "some debugging info\n");
#endif /* _DEBUG_ */
