Even if this is a specification problem, don't you feel this is a big change?  I went 
through a similar problem with Apache SOAP.  The original 2.x series handled Integer, 
Double, etc.  Later releases (2.3+) changed the behavior dramatically and caused me to 
rethink things.

What do the rest of you think?
