This is all very interesting. The test case doesn't really /need/ mutirefs, since the tree doesn't have single instances in multiple places in the tree, but the code which prompted us to write this test case (serializing graphs of objects) does in fact require them, since java object graphs by their nature may contain multiple references to the same objects.
