I've written some XML compression software called BOX that is available at http://box.sourceforge.net. My original goal was to write Axis handlers that would compress and decompress SOAP messages using it. This may make using SOAP for large payloads practical. It would be nice if other compression techniques could easily be plugged into these handlers in case BOX is not the best choice. I haven't found time to work on that yet and would be glad to hand this over.
