Title: HTTPSender not using HttpURLConnection
From what I have read, HttpURLConnection did not handle HTTP 5xx status code prior to J2SDK 1.3.1_01.

Why does HTTPSender use Socket instead of HttpURLConnection?  I'm particularly interested in the case where SSL is not being used and a proxy is not being used.  I've been told that there would probably be a performance benefit if HttpURLConnection were used instead of Socket.
