I started with org.apache.axis.message.DeserializationContextImpl which has a 'recorder' instance member of type SAX2EventRecorder. I guess it's something to do with optimising serialization of the parse tree, but it's not immediately obvious from the code :-). It would save me some reverse-engineering effort if someone could describe the design in a paragraph or two. I promise to put any succinct design principles in the Architecture Guide for posterity.
