tried to re-create the problem and noticed interesting/different results.
In this last case I create a new mail message (not responding), and I see what looks like (to my Notes mail reader) plain text results on the commons mailing list, and HTML on axis-dev. My personal setting is "plain text" for internet mail.
By generating this message to both mailing lists at the same time, and two "interested" parties, I hope to further determine what is happening...
