Yep, that's the idea - you can leave your existing web service as is. That's providing both sides use axis2, but of course a JMS solution needs Java on both sides anyways.
Now actually all the Message Exchange Protocols (MEP) are standardized, and the async pattern follows In-only . So while these MEP's have limited support in Axis 1.x - if any at all, I just not sure - any modern soap stack should support it providing they are following the standards. You'll have to do some research on what clients you can say you're going to support and if they follow the MEP's .
