Axis client serialized int,long, short, etc. defaulted to 0 if not specified

Has anyone noticed that if a request is generated without setting values 
for int, long, etc. bean parameters, that Axis serializes these values 
defaulted to zero?  This causes problems with some web services.  I 
can't see any way to turn off this behavior.

Can someone enlighten me?  What is a poor hacker to do if zero is not a 
valid value and also the parameter to the bean is optional?  Be it known 
that I do not own the web service so I can't fix it on the other end :-)

Inquiring minds really, really need to know.
