I just answered this in private mail, here's the gist of it:
The
AddHandler axkit .xml .xsp
directive shown in the article's config tells Apache to use AxKit's C
handler instead of the "SetHandler perl-script/PerlHandler AxKit"
approach, which uses mod_perl's C handler and AxKit's Perl handler.
