Thanks for everyones quick help on this. I got it working now. After turning up the debug level I saw additional messages indicating that it couldn't find XML::Parser. Of course I had installed this but eveidently it was a botched install. After reinstalling this and several other needed modules it all works. This leads me to a suggestion. The INSTALL file recommends installing AxKit with perl -MCPAN which I did. I use the CPAN module to do a lot of installs and the problem I find is that if it has a problem installing a dependency it still goes on and installs the module you were after. If you're lucky you see the error message go by, else you may think you had a good install but you didn't. Perhaps I'm not using CPAN.pm correctly. In the case of AxKit, since there are so many dependencies, it may be better to just list them in order so we can be sure each one is working before installing AxKit.
Anyhow now that its working I look forward to honing my XPath and puttig it to good use.
