I personally *never* use .xml_cache, it's just a convenient default if you 
want to play with AxKit. What you want is:

  AxCacheDir  /path/to/dir

That dir will then get all cache files for the scope in which the directive 
is valid (I recommend one dir per site rather than one for the entire server 
as I once had).
